The American Power Boat Association Western Divisional Outboard Hydroplane Championships is an annual event that brings upwards of 200 racers and crew into the Oroville area, with an increasing audience of locals and visitors. The event has been quietly growing here since the advent of the Thermalito Forebay in the late 60's and is ready for development into a large, local tourism draw. The Thermalito Forebay is known in the hydroplane racing community as having some of the fastest water in the country, with Oroville poised to become "The Boat Racing Capitol of the Western U.S."

Last year, the Unlimited Jet-Engine, "Miss Budweiser" set the world speed record right here at 227 mph! This year, the Class Record was set by a two-man 1100cc Full Race Runabout at a speed of 112 mph. Racers and fans come from California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona and as far away as Michigan and Illinois.

We hope you will join us to enjoy the excitement of the races and learn about this little known Oroville gem. This event is proving to be an exciting event that appeals to sport racing fans and we invite you to consider how we might take this event to its potential. Our vision is that with sponsored races, we will attract a larger group of boats as well as fan base. The growth of the event will also provide potential for collateral events: a boat show, local art shows and cultural events, club fundraisers and of course, tourists to our waterways.

Please join us for this fun day!

THIS RACE HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR NATIONAL RECORDS

Drivers in each class will be in ferocious competition for:

  • Being first across the clock-timed starting line !!!!!

  • National Speed Record in the record books for 4-laps around a 3/4-mile course.
(That's 3-miles with 8 challenging turns to beat all the others! This course is run TWICE for each class. The scores of each of the two 'heats' are then averaged, and the winner thereby decided.)

  • Guaranteed positions in the July & August "2007 National Championships"

  • Double the normal points toward their annual National High Points awards

  • "APBA Western U.S. Divisional Championship" titles and trophies

  • Publication and feature in national racing magazines and local media outlets
